Balthasar Charles, Prince of Asturias, Prince of Asturias and Portugal (Spanish: Baltasar Carlos; Portuguese: Baltazar Carlos) was the eldest son of King Philip IV of Spain and III of Portugal and his first wife, Elizabeth of France. His sister was Queen of France, Marie Thérèse of Spain. Prince Baltasar Carlos was famously depicted in a number of portraits by Diego Velázquez.

Life

He was born on 17 October 1629 in Madrid. He bore the titles Prince of Asturias and Prince of Portugal. In 1646, he traveled to the north of Spain with his father. He contracted smallpox and became very sick in Pamplona, and was then transferred to Zaragoza. He died there at the young age of sixteen on 9 October 1646.
